Limpet Coil

Harnessing the Power of Limpet Coils Across Industries

Limpet Coil

In exothermic reactions, heat is released, while in endothermic reactions, heat is absorbed. Therefore, precise temperature control is crucial to maintain the reaction process. Heating and cooling systems play a vital role in ensuring product quality and production efficiency. Jacketed vessels are commonly used for this purpose, and these jackets can be conventional, dimpled, or limpet coil types.

Limpet coils, which are half-round pipes welded on the outside of the vessel, allow for the flow of heating or cooling media. They offer an advantage over simple jacket arrangements by ensuring uniform fluid velocity through the coil and providing even distribution of the heat transfer medium around the vessel’s periphery.

Vessels equipped with limpet coils achieve heat transfer coefficients that are 2 to 3 times higher for heating processes and 1.25 to 1.5 times higher for cooling processes compared to conventional jacketed vessels. A double-start limpet coil jacket offers additional benefits over dimpled and conventional jackets, enabling both heating and cooling processes within a single vessel. This type of jacket also provides significant economic advantages, including increased strength for the pressure vessel, higher fluid velocity and turbulence within the jacket, and improved temperature control.
We produce continuous limpet coils in a single piece with multiple turns using a cold roll forming mill, moving away from the traditional method of welding multiple pieces to form a single turn. The diameter of our limpet coils is customized to match the vessel diameter, with an increment of 5 to 10 mm to ensure easy fitting. Our continuous limpet coils, made without any joints, offer several advantages over conventional welded coil techniques.

Salient Features

Inspection and Tolerance

Raw Material Inspection

Coil width and thickness are measured using Vernier Calipers and Micrometers, respectively. Visual inspection is performed to identify material defects such as wrinkles, markings, edge burrs, rusting, camber, and more. Tests for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and microstructure are conducted.

Product Inspection
(In-Process)

Limpet dimensions and diameters are verified against drawings and specifications. Cross-section tolerances are checked in accordance with SA 312 / EN 10162 standards. A thorough visual inspection is conducted to detect any defects. An inspection report is prepared detailing the findings.

Product Inspection
(Pre-Dispatch)

The quantity is verified against the purchase order. Packing and identification are checked to ensure compliance with the purchase order. Dimensions are confirmed based on the in-process inspection report.
